Abacus math near me10/13/2023 ![]() After the Muslim conquest of Persia, Baghdad had become the centre of scientific studies and trade. Al-Khwārizmī accomplished most of his work between 813 and 833. Ibn al-Nadīm's Kitāb al-Fihrist includes a short biography on al-Khwārizmī together with a list of his books. This would still have been possible at that time for a man of Iranian origin, but the pious preface to al-Khwārizmī's Algebra shows that he was an orthodox Muslim, so al-Ṭabarī's epithet could mean no more than that his forebears, and perhaps he in his youth, had been Zoroastrians. Regarding al-Khwārizmī's religion, Toomer writes: Īnother epithet given to him by al-Ṭabarī, "al-Majūsī," would seem to indicate that he was an adherent of the old Zoroastrian religion. King affirms his nisba to Qutrubul, noting that he was called al-Khwārizmī al-Qutrubbulli because he was born just outside of Baghdad. with naive confidence constructed an entire fantasy on the error which cannot be denied the merit of amusing the reader. This would not be worth mentioning if a series of errors concerning the personality of al-Khwārizmī, occasionally even the origins of his knowledge, had not been made. There is no need to be an expert on the period or a philologist to see that al-Tabari's second citation should read "Muhammad ibn Mūsa al-Khwārizmī and al-Majūsi al-Qutrubbulli," and that there are two people (al-Khwārizmī and al-Majūsi al-Qutrubbulli) between whom the letter wa has been omitted in an early copy. The epithet al-Qutrubbulli could indicate he might instead have come from Qutrubbul (Qatrabbul), near Baghdad. His name means 'the native of Khwarazm', a region that was part of Greater Iran, and is now part of Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Ibn al-Nadim gives his birthplace as Khwarazm, and he is generally thought to have come from this region. He also made important contributions to trigonometry, producing accurate sine and cosine tables, and the first table of tangents. : 9 He further produced a set of astronomical tables and wrote about calendaric works, as well as the astrolabe and the sundial. In addition to his best-known works, he revised Ptolemy's Geography, listing the longitudes and latitudes of various cities and localities. The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing, translated into Latin by Robert of Chester in 1145, was used until the sixteenth century as the principal mathematical text-book of European universities. In the 12th century, Latin translations of his textbook on arithmetic ( Algorithmo de Numero Indorum) which codified the various Indian numerals, introduced the decimal positional number system to the Western world. His name gave rise to the terms algorism and algorithm, the Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese terms algoritmo, and the Spanish guarismo and Portuguese algarismo, both meaning " digit". ![]() The term algebra itself comes from the title of his book (the word al-jabr meaning "completion" or "rejoining"). : 14 Because he was the first to treat algebra as an independent discipline and introduced the methods of "reduction" and "balancing" (the transposition of subtracted terms to the other side of an equation, that is, the cancellation of like terms on opposite sides of the equation), he has been described as the father or founder of algebra. Boeing vs airbus cockpit windows10/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This meaning no doubt influenced both lines of evolution of the term, since a cockpit in this sense was a tight enclosure where a great deal of stress or tension would occur. The original meaning of "cockpit", first attested in the 1580s, is "a pit for fighting cocks", referring to the place where cockfights were held. Thus the word Cockpit came to mean a control center. According to the Barnhart Concise Dictionary of Etymology, the buildings in London where the king's cabinet worked (the Treasury and the Privy Council) were called the "Cockpit" because they were built on the site of a theater called The Cockpit (torn down in 1635), which itself was built in the place where a "cockpit" for cock-fighting had once stood prior to the 1580s. However, a convergent etymology does involve reference to cock fighting. The same term later came to designate the place from which a sailing vessel is steered, because it is also located in the rear, and is often in a well or "pit". Thus by the 18th century, "cockpit" had come to designate an area in the rear lower deck of a warship where the wounded were taken. The midshipmen and master's mates were later berthed in the cockpit, and it served as the action station for the ship's surgeon and his mates during battle. The word "cockswain" in turn derives from the old English terms for "boat-servant" ( coque is the French word for "shell" and swain was old English for boy or servant). It referred to an area in the rear of a ship where the cockswain's station was located, the cockswain being the pilot of a smaller "boat" that could be dispatched from the ship to board another ship or to bring people ashore. The word cockpit seems to have been used as a nautical term in the 17th century, without reference to cock fighting. After the Septemattacks, all major airlines fortified their cockpits against access by hijackers. In most airliners, a door separates the cockpit from the aircraft cabin. Bourbon pecan tart recipe10/13/2023 ![]() After reading other reviews, I didn't even bother to roll out the dough after chilling. This was very easy and came out perfectly. Great, even in the pie pan I had to use because IĬouldn't find my tart pans at the last minute. I used all maple syrup cause I love it! Came out This is perfection and we look forward to serving it during the holidays. ![]() Now that he has found this Maple Syrup Pecan Tart he no longer experiments with other recipes. My husband had been delighting us all with his search for the perfect pecan dessert. I think next time I will chill the dough & then roll out & place in tart pan. But I just pressed the pieces in the pan. After I rolled it out it stuck to the board. I didn't have any dark corn syrup, so I used 3 parts light corn syrup and 1 part molasses. I added a touch of cinnamon to the crust.Ĥ. I pressed the dough into six 4-inch tart pans so everyone could have their own "mini-dessert". I didn't roll out the dough, rather separated it into 6 equal sections and pressed it into the pan.Ģ. This dessert was so tasty! After reading the previous reviews I did the following:ġ. It was a little tricky to roll out but it's easy to patch in the tart pan if it tears a bit. You still have to press the edges in place, but it works like a charm. It's even easier still if you slide a pizza paddle or rimless flat cookie sheet under the bottom sheet of wax paper first, and use that to make the flip. Then, when it's rolled out to the right side, peel off the top sheet of wax paper, place the tart pan upside down over the dough, and, using the bottom sheet of wax paper, flip the whole thing right side up, et voilà. The crust is easy, and I've found a shortcut that makes it even easier: instead of flouring the counter, and rolling it out that way, I press the dough ball into a thick round disk, place it between two sheets of wax paper, and roll it through the wax paper. I have made this many times, and it always comes out beautifully. It is so much easer than working with the dough and rolling it out. I don't roll out the dough, I simply press the crust dough in the tart pan (and up the sides) with my fingers. My hack was to finely chop 2 tblsp candied ginger and used it to replace some of the sugar in the crust. any suggestions on getting a less runny filling. I made this recipe and followed the instructions perfectly. I do suggest adding a tsp of good quality vanilla and a Tb of bourbon or dark rum for extra complexity of flavor, but this review is as the recipe is written. Thank goodness I followed the instruction to set the tart pan in a rimmed baking sheet! Other than that, delicious, as written. I filled it to the top (not necessarily a great idea) and had about 1/2-3/4 cup filling leftover. This is a delicious recipe, but I had one problem: I used a 9" tart pan and there was too much filling. They all overflowed during the cooking process, so I wonder what I might have down wrong? still a beginner with this kind of thing. Smells and tastes delicious - I turned it in to 7 small pecan tarts, instead of 1 larger one - mainly because I didn't have the right size flan pan. I also chilled the dough before rolling it out and then chilled it again in the fridge prior to filling. This was lovely - it didn't overflow and looked lovely. I use 1 cup of chopped pecans in the mixture and then 1 and 1/2 cups of whole pecans to decorate the top. I also added the zest of half an orange - which brightened things up - but did take away from the maple flavor. Having read the reviews - I made almost half of the filling - using two small (bantam) eggs, a 1/4 c each of sugar, maple syrup, and corn syrup, 2T butter, and a large pinch of salt. Step 5Ĭut tart into wedges and serve with whipped cream or ice cream. Tent loosely with foil and let stand at room temperature. Step 4īake tart until filling is slightly puffed and set, about 40 minutes. Whisk in maple syrup, corn syrup, melted butter, and salt. Whisk eggs and brown sugar in medium bowl until well blended. ![]() Place crust in freezer 30 minutes before filling and baking. Press dough onto bottom and up sides of pan. Transfer to 9-inch-diameter tart pan with removable bottom. Roll out dough on lightly floured work surface to 10 1/2-inch round. Gather dough into ball flatten into disk. Add flour and beat just until dough begins to clump together. Add sugar, egg yolk, and salt beat until blended. Using electric mixer, beat butter in medium bowl until smooth. Cutaneous tcel lymphoma10/12/2023 It’s common for treatments to be prescribed in combination (such as a topical and a systemic therapy together), with the goal of achieving the best, long-term benefits for your condition with the least side effects.Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL) represent the majority of primary cutaneous lymphomas (CL). Full-body, or systemic, therapies include oral retinoids, photopheresis, interferon, targeted agents, antibody therapies, immunotherapy, and systemic chemotherapy. As most patients with CTCL have only skin disease, there is a lot of ongoing active research into new topical therapies. Skin-directed therapies include ultraviolet light (PUVA, narrow-band UVB), topical steroids, topical chemotherapy (nitrogen mustard, carmustine), topical retinoids, local radiation to single lesions or total skin electron beam (TSEB) radiation. It is important that patients discuss fully with their physician all the treatment options before deciding on a course of action. Treatments are either directed at the skin ( skin-directed therapies) or the entire body ( systemic therapies). Treatments vary from patient to patient, depending on symptoms, stage of disease and personal health profile. The two most common types of CTCL are mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS). Since the disease has a slow course and diagnosis is sometimes difficult, there are probably many more people living with CTCL than current numbers estimate. By 70 years old, there is a four-fold increase in the number of cases of CTCL. CTCL is more common in men compared to women and in patients older than 50 years of age compared to younger people. In CTCL, malignant T-cells reside in the skin, generally causing a rash. Skin cancer usually refers to cancers that develop from other, non-lymphoid cells of the skin, including epidermal cells (which lead to squamous cell carcinoma or basal cell carcinoma) and melanocytes (which lead to melanoma).
